Sensory room
Rockhampton Special School has a multi-sensory environment that can be accessed by students to support emotional regulation, improve focus, increase cognition and address any other individual sensory needs. Classroom teachers are responsible for designing individual or class programs for the sensory room and are supported to implement these with the assistance of the Department of Education's Occupational Therapist.
Heated swimming pool
Rockhampton Special School has a heated pool which is utilised by some students as an alternative to physical education. Individual student programs are aligned with the Australian Curriculum and are created by the classroom teacher with input and guidance from the Department of Education's Physiotherapist. Students benefit from the heated pool in a variety of ways including increased awareness of mobility which ultimately improves their access to the curriculum in the classroom.
We also have a trained learn to swim teacher who implements the HPE curriculum (swimming) at the local pool with students in Prep to Year 6.
Industrial technology and design (ITD)
The school has an Industrial Technology and Design classroom where students are taught elements of investigation, ideation, production and evaluation to create their own artefacts under the guidance of an ITD teacher.
